General discussion / Re: fotolia 7 days rank seems to be back

well. if we are numbers 24 and 25 and he is the next one ahead of us... then I assume he must be number 23 on the ranking target? or is my logic flawed? (by the way, I never though an "animal shooter" would outsell me in stock :D )

i wonder who's nr. 23 now

since we virtually know all big players.

My logic says it would be: Eric

hahaha... no skill in getting from the 40's to 24 !! it just means that somewhere the FT search results were pretty screwy and other peoples images wouldn't show...

I am pretty sure I will fall back again soon!

can you tell us how many sales you have there overall if it's not a secret?

i had 7823 so far and have overall rank 25. it makes us a neighbours, my friend...

7826 with rank of 24... I just can't believe that I climbed back up the ranks without submitting images?! at some point I was down in the 40's

It's a strange thing. I suppose it's like some people have no sales with sport, and I have quite a bit. There are some people that do very well with heavy distortions... maybe I will learn the trick some day ;D

Yep. I do not wish to hash old problems, so I will try and submit again, and see where it goes.

Will wait until next week though and see if the upload problems can be sorted

Accepting only 'exceptional images', whilst, to me, is obviously unsustainable for a stock site starting off, it is typical of that we need to be offering a slightly different service to the rest of the industry. Since i've started, we've had relatively high approval rates, which I think we can afford to do while we continue to build our libraries up. Sales are increasing constantly and if we continue this way we might achieve sales comparative to a site like Dreamstime. To do better than this, though, somewhere along the line, we'll have to do something differently.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. and on a micro level (inside a "micro" industry) I try and do just that in my own portfolio to create sustainability, so even though my "business" type images are more than 25% of my gallery, it compromises less than 4% of my earnings. And my focus is on other image types where gaps exist

I do, however, maintain, that unless you are a "niche market" site, you will have to supply both the rudimentary images as well as the "exceptional" because that is the demand. Sure, my stapeler images is nothing special, but... the client that is paying the money needs one today, and if they miss it on one stock site, they will search on another, so if they allready have one transaction on another site, why not simply see if the rest isn't also available there...

The new buyers are fickle, brand loyalty is something that is fast disolving. Buyers that is e-commerce savy will not think twice to switch between sites to get what they need today (and that is also why I will never go exclusive either)

As I mentioned before, I defended Crestock's rejections and (as I still am) feel that a site has the right to accept and reject images according to their business strategy, but what I would like is for the business to respect me as well and at least give me a guideline according to submit. I do this for a living, and don't have time or resources to waste on the whim of a reviewer who reviews without definite guidelines. (case in point: tourist related images of London rejected when Crestock had only 5 images with a "london" keyword, of which one was a photograph of a map)

At Crestock (a year or so ago) Technical quality flew out the window and acceptance/rejection was on the "gut feel" of the reviewer. And the only reason I left was because nobody could give me those guidelines. If they are in place today, I will gladly move all my images up.

Also, I think if you review for somebody like SS, it's difficult to steal ideas, because you are just too busy trying to get through your queue! but maybe less so on the smaller sites... dunno

Some on a smaller site like LO, on a day I dedicate to reviewing, I do easily 1000+ images, no time to "steal", also don't forget their is always some form of supervision of the reviewer! SY

Yep... always somebody that looks over the shoulder...

I had a series of stupid rejections at IS in the early part of the year... complained after about 3 months of about 3% acceptance ratio, and all of a sudden jumped to a 80 or 90% acceptance (on the following batches that is). Also no response from my query...

Either way... I met an Istock Reviewer on our travels and asked him whether they do not get frustrated seeing so many files on a day (maybe a little bit of Self doubtabout your own quality?) and he said that no, that is where he gets his shooting ideas from... Which I though is a bit lame...

... but again... like so many times mentioned before, I think you get good reviewers that are honourable and trustworthy, and you get a few bad apples... like any other industry.

I know of at least two reviewers that stopped reviewing because they said the review process influenced their own work, and they did not feel comfortable about it...

on the other hand, it's nice for a bit of comedy:

that's what i did so far with 24mm prime. no real difference with 17mm i see. so 12-24mm fisheye would maybe make a better type of "funny" lens.

Oh, absolutely, but I have found that if I push it further than about that look, the sales potential seem to drop... dunno why... I like it  ;)

« : Ноября 29, 2007, 12:41:45 pm »
And as two of the photographers will be you and Luba, you have only to pay one... Now it makes sense, thanks! SY

Hahaha... serious rule in our family... everybody pays for all services and products.

Most of our extended family has their own businesses, and if everybody worked on favours the whole time, and nobody got paid, then there would be serious unhappiness somewhere down the line...

Also, when we still did weddings as a business, we both had our own teams. we often did about 5 weddings on a weekend, so no way we could work together...
