Illustration / Re: Pathfinding question in Adobe Illustrator
« : Февраля 07, 2008, 05:20:08 pm »
Very time consuming;/

But there has to be a way to tell Illustrator to only use one shape (in my case the higher-stacked rectangle) as the main pathfinding element (this time of a cropping order). It doesn't make sense that the cropping applies to each shape, so that they get sliced one by one from each other.

Illustration / Pathfinding question in Adobe Illustrator

Here's my problem: I have a myriad of little expanded brush shapes on the canvas bordering to the bottom. The remains of these shapes poke out of the canvas, so I added a simple rectangular clipping path to delimit the actual "visible" artwork. Now: usually I use the ctrl+7 shortcut to clip the shapes "inside" the rectangle and then use the merge command to cut them off (or use the crop command with a rectangler over all the shapes - same thing, but I like to work the first way so I clean them only at the final export stages). But this time each one of those little shapes has an individual gradient applied to it and they are grouped together all one on top of the other (very various, chaotic). If I use the crop or merge command what happens is that each one of those shapes sliced every single individual shape and what I get is a million, literally million of little shapes all sliced where they shouldn't be.

How am I supposed to tell illustrator to use the crop command ONLY using the rectangular and NOT minding about all the shapes inside? I don't want every one to slice the neighbours, but only the rectangle to isolate and crop the shapes as a group.

Grouping them doesn't work. I always get multisliced shapes all over the place. If I change the colors of the shapes (example applying a white fill to all of them) and use the crop command, I usually get one compound path (and that's not what I want).

Any suggestions? Or will I have to crop them one by one individually?

;)) I have a love/hate relationship with iStock, so no grudges included in the package. Again, no "I" in Stock for at least three months as of now. No surprises;)

p.s.: But thinking as a reviewer, damn, couldn't he had just approved the third one and make everyone happy? The images approved don't go directly to their collection, so I would have to upload them once again and wait for the regular inspection. Arghhh... for one dicky image I have to wait 90 shiny days;)
p.p.s.: Man, we're gonna make it next time. And we buy ourselves a pina colada when we do so, agreed?;)

Argh, I was lured into uberjoy this morning;) Got the mail from iStock regarding the test and saw only the first half in the mail client. 2 approved... then scrolling down I saw the third rejected. I hanged myself by the balls;))

Guess how much I have to wait now to reapply? 90 days;) Does anyone know somebody at iStock how can be bribed for a beer or something?;)

But this struck me like a complete ignorant, man. I had no stroked objects in the artwork, everything expanded and "good to go" (like always). I knew that Illustrator saved the "file library" symbols within the file (even if the symbols were never used in the artwork), but I had no clue it did the same with brushes (at least not unused ones). I had around 20 grunge splatter brushes in the file library and "boom": all were saved along the empty canvas;) 5MB of never used brushes;)

p.s.: Damn, now I can only imagine how many works of mine were sold with a beautiful collection of brushes and symbols free, completely free of charge. Call me Mr. Charity;))

Ok, lesson learned. NEVER leave homemade brushes active in the palette. Delete ALL (and this applies to symbols as well).

p.s.: I'm not talking about stroked objects here, just to clarify.
p.p.s.: Damn, I just lost three hours cleaning finished files because of file size. Silly me.

No shit, AI8 saves the brushes palette within the artwork? Thought this was an advanced feature of AI CS (and later). And on top of that I was certain it was limited to symbols...

I've been working on some new files today and I've stumbled upon a ridiculous problem thet occurs when saving untouched AI files to EPS AI8 format files. Let me put is straight: a blank artwork with no elements saved to a 5MB big file;) I know, I know...;))

First I had like 150K path points in it and the files were 8MB big. Than I started deleting layers and objects to see which were the ones that clubbed the file to size death. One by one they were going to the trash bin, but at the end I deleted the canvas wipe clean and the files were still saved at a whopping 5MB size.

Has this happened to anyone else before?

p.s.: I'm restarting the program right now to see if it was a memory glitch of some sort. But it really is weird, damn...

Just preparing to upload my port to Albumo. Is the site showing improvement sales-wise?

I always go with a A4, no bleed crops, RGB color workspace.

p.s.: Btw, how's Alamy going with your work? I opened an account there but never uploaded s**t (well, actually I did try uploading 400 pics, but only around 30 got through because of the stupid uncompressed nonsense limitations). Never tried resizing my work just for Alamy. Is it worth it?
