: Best wide-angle zoom for Canon?
: Syates November 29, 2007, 04:16:06 PM
I hope to upgrade next year to a 5D, but until then I will use my old and trusty 300D, now I am looking for a good wide angle zoom that would work with both as my favourite subject are landscapes. Thanks, SY

It seems that there is only one zoom-(ultra)wide-lense --  Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM.  ::) Next step will be "narrowing" to Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM..

Wait a minute, and how about Canon 10-22 F/3,5 - 4,5?
As for me it  is the second lense in my "To buy" list (right after 24-105)

But would it work later also on a full frame camera? I don't want cash out a lot of money for new lenses that I can't use when I upgrade, SY

EF-S would now work on 5D  :-\ and Canon 10-22 F/3,5 - 4,5 is EF-S Lense

I found this on the Canon web site: "The EOS 5D is compatible with over 60 EF lenses (excl. EF-S) " here (http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_5D/index.asp)

That means Canon said the 5D is not compatible with EF-S lenses, SY

I've just found this link (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1031&message=24580171&changemode=1) and want to share it in this topic. This is the list of all auto focus lenses for Canon.

When upgrading to the 5D Sybille, be aware that full frame will make almost every lens/glass fault visible. If you upgrade to one of Canons best like the 5D or any Mark you should not bring your body down by lesser lenses. You will have to invest on L lenses. Your lens is your weakest link as soon as you switch to the Full frame 5D.

I already find that! The difference in image quality between images made with the kit lens or images made with the nifty-fifty is amazing, even on my ancient 300D. SY

Sybill,

I have the EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM and I find it is soft for my tastes.... note that I am a super perfectionist... so I am willing to pay for super sharp glass.
